TikTok Car Theft Challenge

A trending video in TikTok went viral after a group of young teens started a challenge on car thefts demonstration.
The craze began in Milwaukee, California in 2021 which was revolutionized by Kia Boys and has grown out of control as more TikTok users jumped on the trend and filmed their attempts to steal their own vehicles.
Before the writer goes further, 'Kia Boys' known as a group of youth criminals who posted videos of themselves stealing and driving cars on social media and captured over 33 million views on TikTok.
Although the videos make catching the perpetrators much easier, the damage to the cars is often severe as repairing work costs up to RM 50K ( $10,000).


The video showed Kias’ model built between 2011 and 2021 and Hyundais’ built between 2015 and 2021 that comes with traditional key engines which these thieves did an attempt on jump starting the cars with USB cable.
The controversial TikTok challenge has also caused supply chain issues, as the parts required to repair the vehicles have been delayed due to high demand.
For Hyundai spare parts, as announced it will begin selling and installing security kits that prevent thieves from breaking into vehicles at Hyundai dealerships across the country. The automaker is also collaborating with law enforcement to make steering wheel locks available.
Although the videos make catching the perpetrators much easier, the damage to the cars is often severe, necessitating repairs that can cost up to $10,000, according to the lawsuit.
Among the most recent thefts occurred in Monroe Count, the Sheriff's Office apprehended a 14-year-old boy accused of stealing two vehicles.
