Jaguar Type 01 Revealed: Remember That Wild Concept? They Actually Built It

Remember the Jaguar Type 00?

The enormous bonnet. The impossibly low roof. The almost cartoonishly dramatic proportions. The complete absence of a conventional rear window.

When Jaguar showed that concept in late 2024, it looked like exactly the sort of thing designers create when they don't have to worry too much about actually putting it into production.

Well, Jaguar apparently wasn't joking.

Meet the Jaguar Type 01, the production car tasked with turning one of the automotive industry's most talked-about reinventions into something customers can actually buy.

Jaguar Type 00 Concept

And while Jaguar hasn't simply photocopied the Type 00 concept we first saw in 2024, the important bit is what it didn't do: retreat into something conventional.

The Type 01 remains a huge, low-slung four-door electric GT with a long bonnet, short front overhang, extended rear, 23-inch wheels and some seriously unconventional detailing. Underneath all that drama is even more serious hardware, including up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm.

So yes. They actually built it.

TL;DR
  • The Jaguar Type 01 is the production follow-up to the radical Type 00 concept and the first production model of Jaguar's new generation.
  • Its tri-motor technology produces up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm, with 0-100 KM/H taking 3.2 seconds.
  • A 118 kWh usable battery provides an estimated up to 720 KM WLTP range, while 350 kW DC charging can add up to 321 KM in as little as 13 minutes.

Jaguar Didn't Suddenly Play It Safe

This is arguably the biggest story here. Concept cars are easy places to be brave. Production cars aren't. Yet many of the ingredients that made the Type 00 look so outrageous have carried over to Type 01.

There's still an extraordinarily long bonnet for something without a combustion engine underneath it. The roof remains low, the wheels measure a massive 23 inches, and the rear continues Jaguar's unconventional approach rather than simply reverting to the familiar shape of another premium electric saloon.

Jaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-1.png

Jaguar says the whole thing achieves a 0.23 drag coefficient, making Type 01 its most aerodynamic production car yet. Active aerodynamic elements help it get there.

And those proportions aren't merely styling wrapped around an existing EV platform. Type 01 debuts the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), developed specifically for the brand and designed to accommodate the car's unusual proportions and intended dynamics. Jaguar says more than 360 patent applications are associated with the project.

Whatever you think about the design, it's difficult to accuse Jaguar of quietly walking back its intentions.

1,030 PS. Because Apparently The Looks Weren't Enough

Jaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-15.pngJaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-14.pngJaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-13.pngJaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-19.png

Then we get to the numbers. Type 01 uses tri-motor technology with Intelligent Torque Vectoring, producing up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm.

That's enough to send this luxury GT from 0-100 KM/H in 3.2 seconds, while 100-180 KM/H takes another 4.0 seconds. Jaguar also quotes 50:50 weight distribution and says experience from its Formula E programme helped shape the car's driving character.

But Type 01 isn't supposed to be a one-trick acceleration machine. Jaguar calls it a grand tourer, which makes what comes next arguably more important than its 3.2-second sprint: how far it can travel.

Up To 720 KM Of Range

Jaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-11.png

Buried beneath that body is a 118 kWh usable battery paired with an 850-volt electrical architecture. Jaguar estimates up to 400 miles (644 KM) under the EPA cycle, or as much as 450 miles (720 KM) WLTP. These are manufacturer estimates ahead of final certification, so real-world results will naturally vary.

Connect Type 01 to a sufficiently powerful 350 kW DC charger and Jaguar says it can add as much as 200 miles (321 KM) of range in 13 minutes under suitable conditions.

There's an interesting long-distance figure tucked into Jaguar's announcement too. At a sustained 120 KM/H, the company estimates up to 320 miles, or roughly 515 KM, of highway range.

JAGUAR TYPE 01: KEY NUMBERS
Power: Up to 1,030 PS
Torque: Up to 1,365 Nm
0-100 KM/H: 3.2 seconds
Battery: 118 kWh usable
Estimated WLTP range: Up to 720 KM
DC charging: Up to 350 kW
Wheels: 23 inches

The Inside Is Pretty Wild Too

Jaguar hasn't suddenly become conservative once you open the doors either. A prominent central spine runs through the cabin and separates it into four individual occupant spaces, accompanied by brass-effect anodised aluminium elements running longitudinally through the interior.

In front of the driver sits a 24-inch single-glass OLED display, complemented by a smaller seven-inch smartphone-style central touchscreen for key controls.

Jaguar has also developed what it calls an Immersive Sound System, including a full-width Panoramic Soundbar. The overall philosophy appears consistent with the exterior: Type 01 isn't trying particularly hard to resemble the premium EV sitting next to it.

Why 'Type 01'?

Jaguar-01-EV-Sedan-Electric-2.png

There's meaning behind the slightly unusual name too. According to Jaguar, "Type" references notable Jaguars from its past, "0" represents zero tailpipe emissions, while "1" signifies the first model of a new generation.

That last part matters. Type 01 isn't merely Jaguar adding another EV to an existing range. It becomes the first production Jaguar built on JEA as the marque begins its radically different new era.

In other words, Jaguar has placed an enormous amount of responsibility on this one very unusual-looking car.

And Yes, You Can Actually Buy One

Jaguar plans to begin Type 01 production at its Solihull facility in 2027, with orders scheduled to open in early 2027 and first customer deliveries expected during the second half of the year.

UK pricing will start from £130,000, which puts any idea of this being a mainstream electric Jaguar firmly to bed.

As of the reveal, Jaguar hasn't announced Malaysian availability or pricing, so we'll have to wait and see whether Type 01 eventually reaches our market.

So, Did Jaguar Actually Do It?

Pretty much. When Jaguar revealed Type 00, plenty of people wondered how much of that outrageous design exercise could possibly survive the journey to a showroom. Now we have the answer.

A 1,030 PS electric Jaguar with 23-inch wheels, an enormous bonnet, up to 720 KM of estimated WLTP range and proportions that still look like they escaped from a motor show stand.

Whether Jaguar's radical reinvention actually works commercially is another question entirely. Type 01 hasn't answered that, and it can't until customers start voting with their wallets.
