1.461 Seconds 0 to 100, New Race EV Record Set!

1.461 seconds, that is the current 0 to 100 timing for the world record holding fastest accelerating EV, and no it was not built by some corporate giant but by some kids from the University of Stuttgart. This record was set by a 20 student team in their self-built race car at the Bosch site in Renningen in the district of Böblingen in Baden-Württemberg. However this was not their first attempt at it as their September attempt had to be called off due to technical issues while back in July during a record test run, the  vehicle broke away at high speed and crashed into the tire barriers. Luckily nobody was harmed although the vehicle suffered enormous damage.

According to Professor Wolfram Ressel, Rector of the University of Stuttgart, "The University of Stuttgart is proud that the GreenTeam has succeeded in setting a new record for the acceleration of e-vehicles. I'm really excited about what our students have accomplished. Studying at university not only means acquiring theoretical knowledge, but also being able to apply it in practice. The GreenTeam's commitment is an excellent example of how knowledge transfer can succeed."

"We are delighted that we broke the world record and brought it back to Germany!", chimed in Pavel Povolni, first chairman of the Förderverein GreenTeam Uni Stuttgart e.V. The window for breaking the record this year was getting smaller and smaller because of the weather. Last Friday afternoon the temperatures were already almost too cool for the racing car. "We made the best of the situation, despite the weather. We can be proud of that," says Marius Goletz, who is responsible for adjustment control. The driver of the e-racing car, Diogo Silva, sums up, "It was exhausting, but a unique experience and it was definitely worth the hard work."

The Electric Race Car which weighs in at just under 145 KG took almost one whole year to complete with in-put from its 20 member team from various backgrounds of knowledge. The project which was built at the Vaihingen Campus pushes out 241 BHP to all four wheels. This translates to a whooping 1750 hp-per-tonne. The race cars' electric motors and battery pack was designed and developed in house entirely.

To put some facts into perspective,  this Race EV achieves a peak acceleration of roughly 2.5G’s, that is equivalent to the force experienced by astronauts when a rocket re-enters the Earth's atmosphere which goes to show why the students did not pilot the record attempt themselves. The previous record for this category was 1.513 held by a Swiss outfit.
