Say you’re in a market for a practical luxury SUV, that is also performance packed. And yet, it has to be passable as an environmentally-friendly vehicle. Seems like an impossible task, or is it?

The highly anticipated BMW XM is officially open for pre-booking online. BMW Group Malaysia stated pre-booking for the XM will be open beginning on Oct 20, 2022.

To celebrate BMW M’s 50th anniversary, the PHEV XM is the marque’s first-ever high-performance luxury ‘Sports Activity Vehicle' (SAV).  Independently developed by BMW M, this ‘SAV’ will feature BMW M’s proprietary BMW M HYBRID driving system, with complete M performance package.

The BMW XM’s design is the culmination of previous BMW Xs’ designs, all into a single luxurious package. BMW’s signature kidney grille is now embossed with XM badging. Completing the whole front fascia is the new Nightgold trimming that wraps around the blackened grille, providing contrasts.

From the side, the XM highlights a very distinctive silhouette, thanks to its slanting roofline, tapering down the rear window for a sportier look. The side trim strip, also draped in Nightgold colour, runs from the front fenders to engulf the rear window panel, giving a new dimension to the side look.

The new 23-inch bi-colour M Star Spoke wheel now comes standard for the XM, with the Nightgold trims being subbed for black in the Shadow Line profile.

Moving back, the first thing you’ll notice is the flared, muscular-looking wheel arches. The new quadruple hexagonal tailpipes are now stacked vertically to distinguish itself from the rest of the M line-up.

Measuring at 5,100 MM in length and 2,005 MM in width, the new XM offers practicality in the form of its 527 L boot space. Said boot space can be further extended to 1,820 L, more than enough for your obligatory Ikea spree.

Inside the XM cabin lies the bright BMW Curved Display, featuring a multi-touch control display and an M-specific information display. Sticking to its M roots is the M-badged steering wheels and seats, as well as carbon fibre finishing all around the cabin.

Not to discard its luxurious reputation is the inclusion of leather door panels, 4-zoned air conditioning system plus a massage function for both front seats. Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and ambient lighting are the cherries on top of this luxurious, decadent cake (or ‘SAV’).

As the first M model boasting a plug-in hybrid configuration, the XM comes with an all-new 5.5 L V8 M TwinPower Turbo engine – projecting 489 HP and 650 NM of torque. The battery pack offers a 25.7 KWH net capacity, with 7.4 KW AC charging enabled.

The ICE combined with its M HYBRID electric motor and eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox spits out a whopping 653 HP and maximum torque of 800 NM, propelling the XM from 0 to 100 KMH only in 4.3 seconds.

Flat out, this PHEV is capped at 250 KMH top speed, with 140 KMH cap when in full electric mode. Standard to this model is the all-wheel M xDrive system for optimum handling and better tractions. Multiple driving modes are also available, such as the 4WD Sand mode and the 4WD Sports mode, for all-out performance.

Additional M-powered specs including the M Suspension systems featuring electronic-controlled dampers and the M Sport brakes, with 508 MM brake discs on front wheels. Also comes standard in the XM are all of BMW’s safety features, including the Adaptive Cruise Control, Parking Assist and Lane Keep Assist.

Available colours for the XM including the new Cape York Green Metallic, that goes astonishingly well with the Nightgold Line trimmings. If gold is not your forte, the XM also comes with the Shadow Line profile, swapping the gold trimmings for black.

Estimated OTR price for the spanking new XM is around RM820,000 for Langkawi market, and RM 1,400,000 for the rest of Peninsula Malaysia. Online pre-booking will be available from Oct 20 onwards, via BMW’s official website.
