In-Depth: Chery Tiggo 4 Pro SUV – Yet Another X50 Contender?

In case you missed it, Chinese brand Chery is on the verge of a comeback into the Malaysian market. It recently previewed five new models for said effort earlier this week, all of which being crossover SUVs. Since we’ve already dived into the Tiggo’s biggest siblings – the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro – beforehand, it is only fitting that now we take a dive into its smallest (and probably cheapest) family member, the Tiggo 4 Pro.

At a glance, the Tiggo Pro 4 appears smaller than other B-SUVs like the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V, being closer in size to the Perodua Ativa in fact. Prop up the ruler and you’ll be fooled to realise that this subcompact crossover measures 4,318 MM long – not too far off from the aforementioned Proton and Honda rivals, both measuring 4,330 MM long.

Powering the Tiggo’s smallest sibling is a 1.5-litre 4-cyl TGDI engine that’s paired with a CVT automatic gearbox – similar to the baseline OMODA 5. This powertrain setup delivers around 145 HP and 210 NM – on par with the rest of its B-segment adversaries.

Just like its siblings, the Tiggo 4 Pro boasts a rather big front grille that makes up the most of its front fascia, and it’s flanked by sharp, angular LED headlights. Corrugated front lip gives this rather small-looking crossover a much bolder stance. Without said addition, the Tiggo 4 Pro is basically a shrunk-down version of the Tiggo 8 Pro sans third-row seats.

The Tiggo 4 Pro stands out from the rest of its siblings thanks to the addition of red trims on both front and side parts of the car – because red means fast and sporty in the automotive design language. Plus, the blackened wheel arches reassures the Tiggo 4 Pro’s SUV-ness.

From a novice’s eye, the Tiggo 4 Pro’s rear end appears similar to the Ativa thanks to the trapezoid-shaped taillights connected to a chrome strip in the middle. Finishing off the rear is the diffuser-like rear lip plus faux tailpipes, also corrugated like the front lip.

Aside from the exterior, the 4 Pro’s interior cabin does feel a little less plush than what we saw in its bigger siblings. The 8 Pro’s dual-tone interior finish is swapped for style-appropriate red trims on the dash, door panels as well as its seats to match said outer red trims.

Its typical yet practical screen layouts consist of a 10.25-inch centre-mounted infotainment display, alongside the 7-inch driver’s metre panel display. No touch control and display for the climate controls here, as the Tiggo 4 Pro only comes with a standard analogue climate control panel.
Latest tech amenities such as Android Auto and Apple Carplay, 360-degree camera view and powered driver’s seat are all present. Have we not mentioned that the smallest Tiggo also comes with a sunroof just like its bigger siblings? Not too bad of a ‘downsized’ Tiggo 8 Pro, we might say.

The Tiggo 4 Pro is marketed at around RM100,000 in South Africa for the exact spec previewed here. With its closest competitor, the Proton X50 boasting a sub-RM100,000 asking price, would the similar asking price range justify what Chery offers in this subcompact crossover?
