4th Anniversary, Proton X70 - Here Are 10 Facts You Need To Know!

After its launch in 2016, the Geely Boyue can be seen in 17 countries. It’s known as the Azkarra, Atlas, or Emgrand X7 Sport in those markets. After Proton inked the collaboration deal with Geely in 2017, the X70 was created to cater to RHD markets.

Since its launch in February 2018, the Proton X70 has turned the fate of Proton which needed an all-new halo product to bring back the glorious days of the Saga, Wira, Satria and the rest during that golden period.

Now for the 4th anniversary of the highly successful Proton X70, let's recap ten (10) facts about the Proton X70 which clearly shows what it has going for it to supercharge Proton back into the glory days.

1. The Proton X70 was the first premium SUV model from Proton and was also the first model developed with the joint collaboration of Geely.

2. The Proton X70 was launched by then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah on 12 December 2018 in Kuala Lumpur much like the launch of the 1st Proton model, Saga by Tun Mahathir. 

3. The Proton X70 is the first “talking car” from Proton with intelligent voice commands where you can just say the catchphrase ‘Hi, PROTON’ to control features like the power windows, air conditioning, navigation, music, and weather apps.

4. The Proton X70 had received more than 10,000 bookings before it even reached showrooms.

5. As of the end of November 2022, 82,869 units of the Proton X70 have been sold since it was launched, making it the best-selling C-segment SUV in Malaysia for four years running.

6. Proton started to produce the X70 in Malaysia at its new extended RM1.2 billion plant in Tanjung Malim in 2019 and the first locally assembled Proton X70 rolled off the production line on 13 December that year.

7. Proton launched the 2022 Proton X70 on 9 June 2022, offering subtle styling updates and a new powertrain option for buyers seeking an SUV with improved fuel efficiency thanks to a 1.5L TGDi engine that is also produced in Malaysia.

8. Brunei was the first export market for the Proton X70 where it was launched on 29 July 2019.

9. To date, the Proton X70 has been exported to seven countries, namely Brunei, Nepal, Egypt, Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan and South Africa. As of November this year, total export sales volume stands at 2,919 units.

10. To meet the overwhelming demand, Proton X70 is also now being assembled in Karachi, Pakistan.

Now with four years down, and more offerings available and upcoming in collaboration with Geely namely X50, X90 and more we still feel the X70 continues being relevant in the C-segment SUV market, maybe some form of electrification will solidify this.
