MOT Proposing Separate Motorcycle Lanes On All State And Federal Roads

To reduce traffic fatalities involving motorcyclists in Malaysia, the Ministry of Transportation proposes building separate motorcycle lanes on every new state and federal route. For record, PDRM documented 418,237 vehicle accidents in 2020, with 4,634 deaths. Malaysian motorcyclists were responsible for seven out of ten traffic fatalities in 2021.

Datuk Isham Ishak, the ministry's secretary-general, stated the suggested approach in a recent interview with NST.

The ministry is currently in discussions with the Local Government Development Ministry and local councils before submitting the proposal to the National Physical Planning Council (MPFN) next year, according to the report (2023). The plan is aligned with the country's Road Safety Plan 2022-2030, which was announced in January of this year with the goal of reducing road fatalities by 50%.

In addition, beginning January 1, 2025, the ministry will make anti-lock brake systems (ABS) required for all motorcycles 150cc and up.
