Toyota Malaysia reclaims the title for Malaysia’s number 1 non-national automaker in 2022 by selling a total of 100,042 new Toyota vehicles last year. This feat also sees UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) breaking Honda’s strong dominance in becoming best non-national automaker in the country, where the rivalling marque won the bragging rights for the last nine consecutive years.
Adding the Lexus’s 2022 sales figure of 993 units, both brands under the UMW Toyota Motor managed to sell a total of 101,035 vehicles in 2022 alone.
The 2022 sales record saw UMWT grow its sales number by about 40% compared to the total sales in 2021, which comprised only 72,394 units (Toyota + Lexus). This was due to the gruelling effect of global supply chains breakdown and challenging market conditions, all induced by the global pandemic.
UMW Toyota Motor president Ravindran K. said, “We are delighted to have been able to put smiles and deliver happiness to so many of our customers across the nation, and thank each and every one of them for their support.”
“I also wish to express our appreciation to all our staff, dealers and business partners who overcame a challenging year. Together, we will continue to keep our customers happy and ensure that quality and service will always remain at the highest levels,” the president added.
Aside from topping the 2022 sales chart for non-national automakers, Toyota Malaysia also dominated the national pick-up truck segment, with a total of 27,198 units of Toyota Hilux sold in 2022 alone. Meanwhile, the marque’s latest SUV crossover, the Corolla Cross post strong sales in the domestic C-segment SUV category, with 17,208 units sold for the year.
For the One Ton Van and Light Duty Wagon segments, both the Hiace and Fortuner topped off their own segments, with 390 and 3,432 units sold respectively.
On the other hand, UMWT’s Customer Service Operations has surpassed the 1-million-vehicle mark in 2022, with over 1.25 million vehicles walked out of Toyota’s service centres nationwide.
