Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One (F1) driver George Russell made a quick pit stop here in Malaysia to inspire local university students in an exclusive event titled ‘Success on the Fast Lane’, hosted by Petronas Lubricants International (PLI).

Taking place in the newly-built Petronas Leadership Centre (PLC) in Bangi, Selangor, the number #63 driver on this year’s F1 grid spoke to more than 200 students hailing from five local institutions, including Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), University Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and many more.

Commandeering the PLC’s Hall 360 main stage, Russell not only shared insights from his early life as a local karting prodigy, but also the challenges and mounting pressures he faced, especially during his current stint racing for the Brackley-based outfit.

Commenting on his self-perseverance in pursuing his life-long dream, the British driver commented, “It takes resilience to keep pursuing your passion. However, it is important to keep remembering your goals and to stay focused on achieving them. It’s also important to be ready to adapt to changing environments – this proves true not just on the track where race conditions can change in a matter of minutes, but also in everyday life.”

“I’m happy to share my experiences, and the lessons I’ve learnt along the way, in the hope that I inspire the students here today to continue to pursue their passion,” the Briton added.

Also sharing the centre stage was Managing Director and Group CEO of PLI Hezlinn Fariss Idris, who commented, “We are so pleased that today, these students got to hear exclusive insights from the life and experiences of George Russell to inspire, motivate, and encourage them to continue pursuing their passion.”

“At Petronas Lubricants International, we recognise the need for undergraduates to hear real-life experiences, from people who have demonstrated grit, guts and resilience to rise above the circumstances and to perform under pressure,” the exec added.

‘Success on the Fast Lane’ is an extension of a series kick-started by PLI back in 2021 titled ‘Shaping Industry-ready Graduates’. The series came about as part of the firm’s effort to prepare industry-ready graduates in the automotive vocation, particularly crucial for Malaysian students who spent over a year learning virtually during the pandemic.

As both the Title and Technical Partner of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Petronas not only provide bespoke fuels and fluids to the F1 outfit, but also implement research findings and data straight from the track to all of its products. Ever since the inception of this partnership in 2010, the team have clinched eight F1 Constructors’ Championship titles, alongside seven F1 Drivers’ Championship wins.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team will continue to participate in the ongoing Formula One 2023 season, with the next stop being the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, taking place in Albert Park Street Circuit, Melbourne, Australia this coming weekend.
