Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (MRT Corp) has finally announced the GO date for the MRT Putrajaya Line Phase 2. The entire Putrajaya Link (PYL) from Kwasa Damansara right up to Putrajaya Sentral would be fully operational starting 3pm, 16 Mar 2023.

With this the entire MRT 1 and 2 line would be now fully operational just pending the future MRT 3 Line which would run along the outer perimeter of the city of Kuala Lumpur connecting MRT 1 and 2.

To recap, phase one of the MRT Putrajaya Line, which runs 17.5 km and comprises 12 stations, was launched back in 2022. The entire Putrajaya Line will house 36 stations spanning over 57.7 km and served by 49 units of four car train sets capable of carrying up to 1,200 passengers. This line would serve a population of around 2 million people stretching from Kwasa Damansara, a new township development in northwest Kuala Lumpur and its southern suburbs, to Putrajaya, Malaysia’s federal administrative centre.

There will be 4 new interchange stations and 2 new connection stations added along the full MRT Putrajaya Line. The interchange stations would be as below:

  1. Titiwangsa Station (KL Monorail Line, LRT Sri Petaling Line, LRT Ampang Line)

  2. Tun Razak Exchange Station (MRT Kajang Line)

  3. Chan Sow Lin Station (LRT Ampang Line, LRT Sri Petaling Line)

  4. Sungai Besi Station (LRT Sri Petaling Line)

and the connecting stations are;

  1. Ampang Park Station (LRT Kelana Jaya Line)

  2. Putrajaya Sentral Station (ERL KLIA Transit Line, ERL KLIA Express Line)

Those plying the interchange stations would be able to switch lines seamlessly without needing to tap out or in as these lines would share a common paid area. However those using the connecting stations would be required to tap out and in in order to switch from one line to another.

The Putrajaya Line is scheduled to carry more than 104,000 people per day with a frequency of 4 minutes during peak hours and 6 minutes during off-peak hours. This is expected to alleviate the severe traffic congestion that now plagues Kuala Lumpur.
