FREE EV Charging Along Highways This Hari Raya Travel Period

KS

The mass exodus of folks living in cities in Malaysia heading back to their respective hometowns to celebrate the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri had begun yesterday. The government had also announced a toll free period from April 19 through April 21, as well as April 24 on all 33 highways.

Adding on to the effort from the government to help the citizens save while travelling, a few EV charging points operators (CPO) have joined in by offering limited period free EV charging for all EV users plying the highways nationwide. Below are the list of CPO’s offering free EV charging.

Gentari would be offering free EV charging to its users starting from 21 April to 24 April 2023. This free charging promotion is for all charging at the Gentari EV Chargers listed below:

  • Petronas Juru R&R
  • Petronas Gunung Semanggol
  • Petronas Pedas-Linggi
  • Petronas Gambang Arah Timur
  • Petronas Gambang Arah Barat

TNB Electron’s free charging period would run from 19 April to 21 April and 24 April 2023, similar to the free toll campaign. TNB Electron free charging is available at:

  • Ayer Keroh R&R (northbound)
  • Tapah R&R (northbound)
  • Paka R&R (northbound)

JomCharge, with the largest EV charging network along the Malaysian highway network would be offering free EV charging from 21 to 24 April 2023. This free charging campaign would be available in 12 locations as listed below:

    • Caltex Ayer Keroh (North Bound)
    • Caltex Ayer Keroh (South Bound)
    • Caltex Bukit Gantang (North Bound)
    • Caltex Bukit Gantang (South Bound)
    • Caltex R&R Skudai (South Bound)
    • BHPetrol R&R Skudai
    • MINI R&R Skudai – near Family Mart (South Bound)
    • Petronas Juru Layby (North Bound)
    • Petronas R&R Gunung Semanggol (South Bound)
    • Petronas Gambang (East Bound)
    • Petronas Pedas Linggi Layby (North Bound)
    • Petronas Gambang (West Bound)

Unlike the above free charging campaign, the Shell Recharge “free” charging campaign through the ParkEasy App is skewed towards credit reimbursement which is slightly complicated. Their campaign period is also the longest running from 19 April till 3 May 2023. Users would be required to have a minimum of RM200 in their ParkEasy App beforehand to access any of the EV chargers. During the campaign period, all credit used for charging would be reimbursed back 100% in ParkEasy credit. However do take note that this reimbursement is not automated as it is mentioned that the credit reimbursement would be only done at the end of the campaign period hence you have to ensure your minimum balance is at all times sufficient. The Shell Recharge HPC stations participating in this campaign are:

    • Shell station at Tangkak R&R (south-bound)
    • Shell station at Seremban R&R (south-bound)
    • Shell station at Tapah R&R (south-bound)
    • Shell station at Pagoh R&R (north-bound)
    • Shell station at Seremban R&R (north-bound)
    • Shell station at Simpang Pulai RTC (north-bound)
    • Shell station at Skudai R&R (south-bound)

Now having listed all the FREE charging stations for this Hari Raya travel period, we for one honestly do not advocate the idea of FREE EV charging as there are high chances of misuse amongst EV users who would tend to hoard the charging spot depriving others. Ideally keep all public charging to a maximum of 80% as charging beyond that would take a longer period of time. Also hope CPO's have taken proper precautions to curb ICE'ing that seems to be rampant especially during festive travel period.
