Prasarana Malaysia Berhad plans to construct a new key performance indicator (KPI) system which aims to monitor and ensure better maintenance of trains like Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems.

According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, he said that the KPI called Mean Kilometres Between Failures (MKBF) is an approach which will be used to assess the stability and journey of trains before damage occurs.

Through said initiative, it has been carry out in several countries beforehand. Whereas the KPI, which is open, will be displayed through monthly updates on Prasarana’s website or social media for public information plus evaluation starting next month.

He also said in addition, reports on the number of passengers, ride factor, escalator and elevator facilities will also be publicly displayed through weekly reports on the same platforms.

The minister further stated that currently they’re experiencing an unsatisfactory situation where the MKBF for the Kelana Jaya LRT line is 150,000 kilometres. From there, it reveals the rate of damage process occurs after said figures seem to be disappointing somehow.

Hence, MKBF's new target by the third quarter of 2026 will be one million which means the train damage will only occur after one million kilometres of travel," he said during  a press conference recently.

As the target will be achieved in stages, Loke confirms that train services will improve following the addition of new coaches in August.

"MKBF also refers to technical disruptions exceeding five minutes... it means that if there is a delay or train disruption of five (minutes) or more, it is counted as a fault and will be evaluated through MKBF," he told Bernama.
