2023MY Toyota Yaris hatch range now sees the base J-variant dropped from the line-up.

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) quietly updated its Toyota Yaris hatchback range for Malaysia this week. In its new 2023 model year guise, the B-segment hatchback and rival to the Honda City Hatchback has lost one variant, but gained more on board kit whilst retaining the same price figures as before.

For 2023, UMWT elected to discontinue offering the Yaris hatch in its base J-spec variant form. This sees the mid-spec E variant now standing as the entry offering into the range whilst the G variant remains at the range-topper. Both also see their respective RM83,300 and RM87,600 price tags remain unchanged.

There aren't any visual changes to note with the re-specced 2023MY Toyota Yaris.

Visually, the 2023MY Yaris hatch for Malaysia remains similar as before, with no signs of our market receiving the face-lifted version that went on sale in Thailand recently just yet. Key changes have happened inside the cabin whereby both variants are have receive updated amenities.

Firstly, the range-topping G variant is now primed with new steering-mounted paddle shifters. Next, both the E and G trims now sport new red-and-white Optitron instrument display panel replacing the old blue-hued unit, new fabric seat covers design, as well upgraded USB-C charging ports from USB-A.

Other upgrades include a new front digital video recorders (DVR or dashcam) offering smartphone connectivity function, as well as the addition of an RFID tag.

The 2023MY Toyota Yaris hatch continues to offer two selectable drive modes and a 7-inch touchscreen display that boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Beyond what we’ve just detailed, there aren’t any other changes to report.  Mechanically, the 2023MY Yaris remains unchanged too as it soldiers on with the familiar 1.5-litre 4-cyl Dual VVT-i powerplant paired with a 7-speed CVT box, the latter managing the former’s 107 PS and 140 NM outputs to the front wheels.

Common features found in both include keyless entry and ignition, two selectable drive modes (Sport and Eco), VSC and traction control suites on top of the ABS, EBD and BA suite, seven airbags, and hill-start assist amongst many. Unchanged too is the 7-inch infotainment unit that offers wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
