Price and specs of the highly anticipated new BYD Dolphin EV hatch have laeaked online just hours before its official launch later today!

Though we are just hours away from the official Malaysian launch of the new BYD Dolphin compact EV hatchback, specifications and prices for said model have already leaked online in the wee hours today. Judging from the leaked images we’ve sighted via social media, we are certain this is legitimate.

Based on which, there’s plenty good news. For starters, it appears that BYD Sime Darby Motors will offer Malaysians the Dolphin in both Dynamic Standard Range and Premium Extended Range flavours – similar to the Atto 3. Secondly, the most affordable of which commands a tempting nett selling price of RM99,900.

Sans insurance, on-the-road prices for the Dolphin reads at RM100,530 (Standard Range) and RM125,530 (Extended Range). We can also expect the same 6-year or 150,000 KM base vehicle warranty plus separate 8-year or 180,000 KM EV battery and drive unit warranties included – again, just like the Atto 3.

Coupled with the kit list we’re about to detail in the following paras, said prices have indeed made the Dolphin a tempting proposition for many avid Malaysian EV enthusiasts, even against the bargain basement alternative that was the Neta V.

So what’s in store? Plenty, much of which are common across both guises too. However, we’ll highlight some key differences between the Standard Range and Extended Range variants which, arguably, justifies the sizable price gaps between them.

The Dolphin in base Dynamic Standard Range guise makes do with a smaller- 44.9 kWh iteration of the BYD brand’s proprietary ‘Blade’ battery pack. It juices a front-mounted motor that outputs 94 HP (70 kW) and 180 NM to the front wheels, which enabled 0-100 KM/H despatched in 12.3 seconds.

In Premium Extended Range, the Dolphin gets a larger 60.48 kWh-sized version of BYD’s ‘Blade’ battery design, and it juices a peppier motor that drives the front wheels with 201 HP (150 kW) and 310 NM instead, which in turn sees this flavour of the Dolphin able to despatch the century sprint in 7 seconds.

Maximum AC and DC charging inputs are lower at 7.4 kW and 60 kW respectively in the Standard Range, whereas the Extended Range boasts the ability to accept higher 11 kW AC and 80 kW DC inputs instead. Via DC charging inputs, 10-80% recharges take roughly 40 minutes in both too. Both also have V2L abilities.

Both variants will feature front-mounted motors driving the front wheels juiced by BYD's proprietary 'Blade' battery design that also offer V2L abilities.

The Dolphin will command nett selling prices as low as RM99,900!

Aptly, the next big difference lie in range, with the Dynamic Standard Range holding a claimed WLTP figure of 340 KM, whilst the Premium Extended Range betters that significantly to 427 KM. Indeed, these are respectable figures given both the Dolphin’s compact size and kerb weight.

As for size, the Dolphin’s footprint is similar to the current third generation Perodua Myvi. In fact, this Chinese compact EV sits 4,290 MM long with a 1,530 MM wheelbase, 1,770 MM wide, and 1,570 MM tall. The result also sees a decently sized cabin with a 345-litre standard boot space (expandable to 1,310-litre).

Though compact in size, the Dolphin is set to offer respectable boot space measuring 345 litres. This can be expanded up to 1,310 litres with the rear seats folded.

Differentiating both variants visually are the wheels (16-inch vs 17-inch) and the presence of a panoramic glass roof (Extended Range only). Also, both variants differ in terms of rear suspension assemblies as the higher-specced of the two gets a multi-link type setup as opposed to a torsion beam (Standard Range).

Apart from which, the list of on-board kit between both guises are largely similar. Key highlights include the rotating 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen display primed with Apple CarPlay (wired) and voice assistant plus a 6-speaker hi-fi audio setup, navigation function, and voice assistant.

Like the Atto 3, the Dolphin will feature a rotating 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen display offering Apple CarPlay (wired), voice assistant, and other similar connected features.

A barrage of active driver assistance (ADAS) features will be present across both variants too.

Other shared kit include keyless entry and ignition, automatic climate control with PM2.5 filter, up to four USB charging ports (both USB-A and USB-C), 6-way (driver) powered driver seat adjustment, plush yet sustainable synthetic leather seat and cabin upholstery, and a 360-degree parking monitor.

What’s exclusive to the Extended Range though are things like ventilated front seats, 6-way powered driver seat adjustment, and wireless smartphone charging pad. Also standard-equipped across both are an array of active driver assistance (ADAS) features.

in terms of size, the BYD Dolphin will share a footprint that's similar to the Perodua Myvi.

Key amongst the latter front includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), lane-departure warning (LDW) and -prevention assist (LKAS), blind-spot detection (BSD), as well as rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) and braking (RCTB).

These, by the way, come on top of an array of standard passive safety features such as ABS, traction and stability control suites, 6 airbags, ISOFIX childseat anchors, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Yes, both variants are fully-loaded on this front, which perhaps ought to justify their respective prices.

This is as far as we can determine for now. We’ll have more details from the official launch later today. Stay tuned for updates.
