Launched: BYD Dolphin EV – 2 Variants, 427 KM Range, From RM99K*

The BYD Dolphin EV hatch has officially landed in Malaysia!
Sime Darby Beyond Auto (SDBA), official importer and distributor of BYD EVs in Malaysia has officially launched its second model into our local market, the BYD Dolphin. This much-anticipated EV hatch is poised to go against the likes of Neta V and GWM Ora Good Cat as one of the most the affordable EVs in the market.

As we reported earlier, the Dolphin is offered in two variants – Dynamic Standard Range and Premium Extended Range, with both models underpinning the same e-Platform 3.0, while using BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery pack. For the baseline Standard Range variant, the Dolphin packs a 44.9-kWh battery pack that powers its 94 HP (70 kW) and 180 NM-rated single motor setup for a maximum EV range of 340 KM (WLTP).
Meanwhile, the range-topping Extended Range version employs a larger 60.48-kWh battery pack, which powers a peppier electric motor rated at 201 HP (150 kW) and 310 NM for a maximum EV range of 427 KM (WLTP).
Aside from outputs, another notable difference between the two models lie in their rear suspension setup, whereby the Standard Range gets a Torsion Beam setup , and the Extended Range benefits with an arguably better Multi-link setup instead.

As for charging, the Standard Range supports DC charging at up to 60 kW rate, whereas the Extended Range gets a faster 80 kW DC charging rate – enabling both models to charge from 10% to 80% in roughly 40 minutes. As standard, both models also support a slower AC charging method – 7.4 kW and 11 kW respectively – as well as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, with a discharge adapter already provided by BYD.

Visually, the Dolphin sits rather compact, masuring 4,290 MM long, with a wheelbase of 1,530 MM – making it somewhat similar in size to the current third-gen Perodua Myvi. Featuring the ‘Ocean Aesthetic’ design concept, the Dolphin comes with auto LED headlights with High-Beam Assist (HBA), swooping bodywork with a sporty hatchback silhouette, while the rear comes with geometric LED taillight design with full-width light bar.

Differentiating both variants visually are the wheel options, with the Standard Range model rolling on 16-inch ones shod in 195/60 tyres, while the Extended Range rides on larger 17-inch wheels with 205/50 tyres. As for colourways, the Dolphin is offered in three two-tone options – Atlantis Grey with Delan Black, Ski White with Urban Grey, as well as Surf Blue with Urban Grey.

The BYD Dolphin is one of the most affordable new EVs in the market
Upon its launch, the BYD Dolphin EV is set to become one of Malaysia’s most affordable EVs, with a nett selling price starting from RM99,900. Sans insurance, you'll be looking at RM100,530 on-the-road for the Dynamic Standard Range, whilst the Premium Extended Range RM125,530 instead.

Included in said figures is a standard 6-year or 150,000 KM vehicle warranty, an 8-year or 160,000 KM warranty for the battery pack, plus a separate 8-year or 150,000 KM warranty for the EV drive unit – all provided by SDBA.

Additionally, customers can also opt for the optional add-on service packages. Covering the basic servicing like reducer oil, drive motor coolant and brake fluid services, the Standard Package starts at RM1,688 for the 3-year or 60,000 KM plan, RM3,888 for the 6-year or 120,000 KM coverage, and RM4,888 for the 8-year or 160,000 KM coverage.

Meanwhile, the Plus Package adds a few more servicing options such as the 12V battery, brake pads and rotors replacements. This package starts at RM7,888 for 6-year or 120,000 KM coverage, which can go up to RM12,888 for the extended 8-year or 160,000 KM coverage.

Furthermore, the first 800 customers who placed a booking for the BYD Dolphin are entitled to complimentary EV charging credit worth RM1,300 for either Yinson GreenTech or Gentari public charging stations, depending on your preference.
