Tesla is set to make its official debut in Malaysia on July 20.
Tengku Zafrul Aziz, minister of investment, trade, and industry, stated that the government has no plans to phase out the approved permit (AP) system for car imports. He stated that the system was still in place, despite the government's decision to allow global electric vehicle maker Tesla to sell cars in the country without the usual AP rules.

“We are not discussing that (abolishing the AP system) yet, there is no intention at this point in time,” he told Bernama.
Tesla was previously announced as the first approved applicant for an initiative to help boost demand for battery electric vehicles and develop the support system for their adoption. prev-desktop_miti-formally-announces-implementation-of-new-open-ap-policy-now-unlimited-permits-65429_cover_2019_some-new-jdm-alphard-by-open-ap-com-cover-r.jpg

Tengku Zafrul stated that the AP system would continue to be used even if the approved company was another car manufacturer, as long as it brought the technology that Malaysia desired.

“The AP system is still there. What we have announced is that we want them to bring in the technology. We are consistent not just to Tesla, but to whichever company that brings value, we are going to treat it consistently. It’s not exclusive for Tesla,” he explained.
Last Friday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the government's collaboration with Tesla founder Elon Musk would result in tens of thousands of skilled job opportunities in the country. image.png
