UMW Toyota: Hybrids Still “Most Suitable”, Second HEV Model Confirmed

Earlier today, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) president Ravindran K has confirmed that the firm is set to introduce a second hybrid (HEV) model offering for the local market later this year.
“For now, we believe HEVs are the most suitable for Malaysians and will add a second HEV model in 2023,” said the exec in the press statement issued earlier today. Though he didn’t name which model specifically, all signs point towards the new TNGA-based Innova Zenix MPV model launched in Indonesia recently.

Presently, UMW Toyota offers just one HEV model, which is the Corolla Cross Hybrid crossover SUV.
Presently, UMWT offers the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid – also a TNGA-based model – as its sole HEV offering, with said crossover SUV being produced locally at its state-of-the-art plant in Bukit Raja, Selangor. The second HEV model to join alongside it should see the same localisation effort as well.

This marks a crucial step as it reflects the firm’s multipath-way approach towards carbon neutrality. For that, UMWT believes that reductions in carbon dioxide emissions can start right away using its HEV tech. However, this doesn’t mean the firm hasn’t considered full electrification – it actually has.

The firm states that it is taking a longer-term view towards evaluating battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Both the Toyota and Lexus brands already have fully electrified models in existence – BZ4X and RZ450e respectively – and they are being considered for introduction in Malaysia soon, says the firm.
“Rest assured that with our multipath approach, no customer will be left behind as we will always ensure that there is a suitable and accessible mobility solution for everyone,” added Ravindran on the matter.
