MOT: e-Plate Feature Being Studied To Reduce Road Accident Numbers
KS
3-11-2023
The e-Plate feature in new road safety cameras is being studied by the Ministry of Transport as a potential improvement and risk reduction strategy for national accidents. The new capability in these cameras is believed to be able to detect drivers, vehicle licences, and vehicle speed levels, making enforcement easier, according to Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.
"The Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Ministry of Transport are currently examining and considering new directions regarding the Automatic Awareness Safety System (AWAS) cameras," he continued. These cameras might be installed to new sites, but not in their existing configuration (AWAS). That is, however, still being studied. Future features and cameras will be introduced to capture (record) speed, since the current study aims to detect drivers who break driving licence and road safety requirements.
Datul Hasbi when questioned by Datuk Suhaimi Nasir (BN-Libaran), who inquired about the government's plans to reduce the road accident rate in Malaysia responded that a study by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) found that the compliance level of road users at the locations where these cameras are installed reaches 99 percent.
Furthermore, to a question from Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) regarding the costs involved, Hasbi stated that this matter is still under study, and the actual costs will be announced if their usage receives approval in the future.
