Congestion Charges Necessary To Ensure City’s Sustainability

Once the infrastructure for public transportation in Kuala Lumpur has developed to a certain point, the government ought to consider enacting congestion charges to reach sustainable city goals in the Klang Valley.
Although a decision has not yet been made, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stated that the government must take this into consideration. "There have been long talks on congestion charges with the completion of Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3). "That is not my decision, but it is something we have to consider if we want to talk about a more sustainable city moving forward," he said in his speech during the launching ceremony of Prasarana Sustainability Blueprint.
The minister also stressed the government would have to make a difficult but necessary decision to impose congestion charges, much like it did when it introduced the targeted electricity tariff, which forced businesses to investigate solar energy.
For the record, Then-transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong stated that congestion charges would be taken into consideration following the completion of the MRT3 in 2030 and that the fee schedule for cars entering the city would be examined following the completion of the public transportation network system.
