Multi-Tiered Automated Rapid Transit System Planned To Overcome JB Congestion - Johor MB
According to Bernama, the Johor state government plans to build a multi-tiered automated rapid transit (ART) system in Johor Bahru to alleviate the city's traffic congestion. The report states that Johor menteri besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi stated that DYMM Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar and Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail had given their consent for the proposal to be presented at the federal level for further consideration.
"At the state level, we have received approval from the Johor Regent and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to execute the multi-tiered ART in anticipation of the surge in travelers to Singapore following the completion of the Rapid Transit System (RTS)," stated Onn Hafiz.
“Johor Bahru also requires various public transportation options to facilitate the smooth movement of the public in and out of the city, he said, adding that the Johor government is committed to transforming its transportation system through the increased use of electric vehicles, including in its public services.
Onn Hafiz added that the Johor Public Transport Corporation (PAJ) will be the vehicle through which the Johor state government will introduce initiatives to introduce electric buses.
Meanwhile, as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, bus service provider Handal Indah, founded and chaired by Lim Han Weng, has invested RM80 million to buy 60 electric vehicles and build charging infrastructure for the buses.
The first automated rapid transit system in the nation, operated by Mobilus, a joint venture of 51:49 shares between Ireka Corporation and CRRC Urban Traffic, a member of the CRRC Group, arrived in Johor in January 2021 for its bus pilot testing program.
According to The Edge Markets, the ART multi-carriage vehicles can carry up to 500 passengers in five carriages, with a maximum passenger capacity of more than 300 in three carriages.
