BYD recently unveiled both the Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i models in China, both featuring the marque’s new fifth-generation DM-i plug-in hybrid system (PHEV), featuring a 1.5-litre engine rated at 99 HP (74 kW) and 126 NM of torque.

These models will be available in different variants based on the hybrid battery and electric motor capacity. The lower-spec versions boast an 80 km CLTC all-electric range, equipped with a 10.08-kWh battery and a 161 HP (120 kW) electric motor with 210 NM of torque. The higher-spec versions are fitted with a larger 15.874-kWh battery pack, extending the all-electric range to 120 KM (CLTC), which is then paired to a peppier motor setup rated at 215 HP (160 kW) and 260 NM.

More importantly, BYD claims that thanks to this new in-house PHEV tech, these two models boast a combined driving range of up to 2,100 KM (CLTC). This feat is achievable thanks to the impressive thermal efficiency of 46.06% the PHEV engine boasts, while its fuel consumption rate is capped at 2.9L/100km with the battery depleted. Additionally, this system integrates advanced thermal management for the engine compartment, battery, and cabin to optimise energy consumption.

Both the Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i would share the same platform, with the Qin L DM-i being slightly wider. The Ocean Series Seal 06 DM-i, on the other hand, measures 4830 mm in length, 1875 mm in width, and 1495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2790 mm while the Dynasty series Qin L DM-i measures similarly except that it is 5mm wider. Both models would run on MacPherson front suspension and a new E-type four-link independent rear suspension.

The Seal 06 DM-i would come equipped with a 15.6-inch central infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel. Other standard features include six airbags, ETC, mobile phone NFC key, automatic air conditioning, one-touch window control for the driver's side, a tire pressure monitoring system, and six speakers.

Higher-spec models would benefit from addition of a panoramic sunroof, DiPilot L2 driving assistance system, electric adjustable front passenger seat, a built-in dash cam, 18-inch wheels, an eight-speaker sound system, and heated and ventilated seats.

Meanwhile the Qin L DM-i features a more simpler interior design with additional physical buttons. It also features BYD's signature rotating 15.6-inch central infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel. Both the standard and higher spec features would mirror those of the Seal 06 DM-i.

Interestingly, both models are priced identically in China, available in five trim levels ranging from CNY 99,800 (RM 64,000) to CNY 139,800 (RM 90,800). This pricing strategy would position both these models at the same level and pretty much give buyers an option to opt for which look and feel they gravitate more towards.
