Next-Gen VW Transporter T7 Teased with EV & PHEV Variants
The seventh-gen Volkswagen Transporter commercial van is slated to arrive in the first quarter of 2025 with both BEV & PHEV versions.
It seems that Volkswagen is pretty serious about its electrification plan, with the automaker now expanding its electrified lineup into its commercial arm. Teased ahead of its 2025 debut today is the new T7-gen Volkswagen Transporter, with said commercial van slated to arrive in both battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, alongside the standard ICE options.
Based on the current-gen Ford Transit Custom van, the new Transporter T7 will replace the current-gen Transporter T6.1, completing VW’s new “Bulli family” van lineup that currently comprises the passenger-focused Multivan and the ID.Buzz EV MPV. Instead of developing a new ladder-frame chassis, VW instead uses the trusted MQB Evo platform for the new Transporter, while lending Ford’s help on both the design and powertrain fronts.
As a result, the upcoming Transporter T7 shares many similarities with its oval-badged twin, including the overall facade of this commercial van. To make the new Transporter look less like the Transit Custom, the VW team has taken a lot of time in designing its front part by combining the styling cues from both the Multivan and ID.Buzz.
Depending on the variant, the Transporter T7 will also ride on newly-designed wheels with sizes ranging from 16 to 19 inches, with the coolest option, known as the Indianapolis, featuring a six-spoke design with a diamond-cut rim flange, finished in black.
At the rear, the new Transporter will get its own distinctive LED taillight design, featuring the same slim LED graphics we’ve seen in many newer VW models, while its tailgate comes with either a single door form or the more commercial-biased dual rear doors setup.
Dimension-wise, the new Transporter T7 will be about the same size as the Ford Transit Custom, measuring 5,050 MM to 5,450 MM long, with a wheelbase ranging from 3,100 MM to 3,500 MM – both depending on the variant. There’s also several interior configurations offered for the new Transporter, ranging from the most basic, commercial-biased ones to the most richly kitted.
As we mentioned earlier, the new Transporter van will arrive in both BEV and PHEV forms, alongside the usual ICE-based models, including a diesel-powered version. While VW has yet to unveil detailed specifications for each of these powertrain setups, their power outputs could range from 108 HP to 282 HP, with the latter figure possibly reserved for the BEV variant.
Ahead of its planned debut in Q1 2025, pre-sales for the upcoming Volkswagen Transporter T7 have already commenced in its native European market, with prices starting from €36,780 (RM187,102) onwards. Production of the new Transporter will take place at the Ford Otosan plant in Turkiye, alongside both the Ford Transit and Tourneo Custom vans.
