JPJ will soon start issuing International Driving Permit (IDP) documents in a new format that meets latest global standards.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently took to social media and announced that the department has begun issuing a new format of International Driving Permit - or IDP for short. The department says the revised new document format now aligns with the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

Despite the outgoing JPJ-issued IDP format’s full functionality in its application as a valid document, there have been cases where it has occasionally been rejected due to its non-compliance with the actual designated size set by the convention mentioned.

In its current form, JPJ-issued IDPs are significantly bigger in size, measuring 155 x 115 MM, and has a cover that is pale yellow in colour. In contrast, the new IDP should comply with the convention’s document standards, including calls for it to be in A6 size (148 × 105 MM) with a grey cover colour

This document size was dictated in the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Said ordnance was created to advance the growth and security of global road traffic. It defines vehicle origin identifying markings, minimum mechanical and safety equipment requirements, and universal norms across contractual parties.

Current format of IDP issued by JPJ. In recent times, there have been cases overseas where this document has been rejected due to its non-conformity to global standards.

Regarding the new IDP's availability, JPJ says the new IDP format will be issued as soon as the current IDP's supply runs out.  IDPs that are already in place and have a running validity of a year from the date of issue are still recognised for what they are.

Like before, individuals seeking to apply one need only visit any JPJ branch and ready a fee of RM150, along with passport-sized photo plus photocopies of their NRIC and valid Malaysian driving licence. KR
