Applications for Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP) have surged to 23,649 between May 28 and June 29, surpassing last year's total of 15,424, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. During the same period, 6,120 VEP tags were issued, and 1,080 tags were activated.

Recipients of the VEP tag would however be required to activate their VEP tags by uploading a photo of the vehicle registration number along with the affixed VEP tag at https://vepams.jpj.gov.my. An unactivated VEP tag is considered invalid. He also mentioned that VEP applications can still be made after the enforcement date of Oct 1.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has improved the VEP registration system to make the process easier. Key changes include online cancellation and deregistration of VEPs, automatic cancellation of VEPs after five years, and online renewal of VEPs before they expire. Notifications will be provided to vehicle owners before the VEP term finishes.

To handle the increasing volume of requests, the MOT has extended its email support team from five to fifteen individuals, as well as the number of staff at VEP Collection Centres from seven to twelve. This is anticipated to speed up responses to questions and increase service efficiency.

Additionally, Loke also announced the introduction of the Open Toll Payment System (OPS) from Aug 1, which will allow the use of credit and debit cards, in addition to Touch N' Go, for Road Charge payments.

The VEP regulations at the Malaysia-Singapore land border will be strictly enforced from Oct 1, to ensure compliance with road rules. After this period, foreign vehicle drivers without a VEP will face enforcement actions under Section 66H (7) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), which includes fines up to RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months as per Section 119(2) of Act 333.
