The Malaysian government will facilitate Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) registration for foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia, but enforcement of the VEP will begin on October 1 without any delay or U-turn.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated at the moment the government lacks a method to track foreign-registered vehicles with summonses and offences. Once the VEP system is in place, foreign motorists with violations in Malaysia will be required to settle their fines before leaving the country.

He expressed hope that Singaporean drivers would adhere to Malaysian laws and regulations, similar to how Malaysian drivers comply with Singapore's laws.

The Transport Ministry (MOT) is also aware of the difficulties applicants are facing in registering for the VEP hence the . The ministry's Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been tasked with reviewing and simplifying the standard operating procedure.

Additionally, under the new regulation, any foreign motor vehicle caught without a VEP can can be fined up to RM2,000 or imprisoned for up to six months upon conviction.

Further elaborating on this matter, Loke informed that all foreign motor vehicle owners crossing the Johor Causeway and the Second Link can use the time from now to either renew their expiring VEP or complete the registration process to obtain a VEP for their vehicles.

He also noted that based on current records, there are only about 70,000 Singapore-registered motor vehicles that have registered and activated their VEP tags, compared to over 200,000 registered vehicles that have yet to complete the installation and activation of their VEP tags.

Additionally, Anthony mentioned that the VEP implementation will also be expanded to the Malaysia-Thailand land border in the near future.
