Flash Flood At WTCKL; 50 Cars Affected
The Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre (WTCKL), here, was transformed into a chaotic scene by an intense evening of heavy rain. Cars were partially submerged, and guests were frantically trying to save their vehicles.
It was thought that the flash flood was caused by Sungai Batu, a nearby community, overflowing after a period of intense rain that started at around 4 p.m. The flooding had gotten worse by six o'clock in the evening, especially in the Hentian Putra parking lot, where a number of cars were left partially submerged in rising water. To prevent more damage to the stranded vehicles, officials and tourists worked together to push them onto higher ground.
As the evening progressed, traffic in and around WTCKL became more congested as vehicles navigated flooded streets. The situation, however, was under control by 7.30 p.m.
There is no doubt that floods have a significant, wide-ranging effect on people impacted by them, and this is never more obvious than when the losses incurred by floods are quantified in terms of money.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) stated in a special report on the effects of floods in Malaysia that in 2022, losses from floods totaled RM622.4 million.
Even though the total amount is much less than the staggering RM6.1 billion in losses that were recorded in 2021, the psychological damage is still very real. Flood risk is frequently overlooked when purchasing car insurance, so flood coverage or special perils boxes are rarely prioritized. It is more expensive to add flood or special perils coverage, but the cost is small in comparison to the value of your vehicle and can protect you financially if the unexpected occurs.
