Cambodia's GTV Motor Establishes Assembly Plant In Kandal
GTV Motor Co., Ltd., a Cambodian car manufacturing company, announced that it is nearly finished investing in a car assembly plant on National Road 2 in Kandal Steung District, Kandal Province.
The automaker plans to begin initial production in early 2024 in a 100,000-square-meter assembly plant capable of producing up to 35,000 units per year. Approved by The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) in June 2022, the US$15.6 million plant will focus on the local Cambodian market rather than export quotas, and is expected to generate 738 new jobs.
Previous registration records show that during the last ten years, both the supply and demand for new cars in Cambodia have increased.
The automaker wants to achieve this by ensuring that local new car prices are lowered and that the cars meet local standards for quality. GTV Motor is the designated car assembly and export facility for Volkswagen in Southeast Asia, a well-known German automobile brand, Khmer Times reported.
The GTV Motor plant in Cambodia will initially concentrate production on five reasonably priced car models, which it believes will accommodate a variety of local consumers' tastes and budgets.
According to Soy Benlyly, GTV Motor Co., Ltd.'s Chief Financial Officer and Deputy General Manager, the new facility will focus on the development of Cambodian-owned branded vehicles.
As per the roadmap for the development of the automotive and electronics sector in Cambodia, which was outlined by the Royal Government, the new factory is expected to provide support to the country's heavy industry. Since registering the company for the first time in 2022, the company has also established the "GTV Automotive Electronics Research Institute (GTV AERI)" in Cambodia in order to continue growing human resources suitable for the automotive production sector. The National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia has a partnership with GTV AERI, which also has affiliated offices in Germany, China, Japan, and Singapore, to offer advanced vocational training for the advancement of professionals in the Cambodian automotive industry.
