Johor Sees Steady Incoming Traffic From Singapore Since VEP Roll-Out

According to a report by The Star, there has been a gradual increase in the number of Singaporeans visiting Johor since the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) was implemented on October 1.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke was quoted as saying that although there was a minor dip in the number of Singaporean cars entering Johor in the first two days, traffic levels have since returned to normal. “I have been receiving reports on a daily basis on the number of cars coming in, and the number has already gone back to normal,” Loke said on the sidelines of the Johor DAP Convention here.
“Yes, there were some reductions on October 1 and 2. However, after I went down and gave my assurance on October 3, there was no more reduction.” When it comes to the penalties for drivers who haven’t registered for the VEP, Loke assures that no action will be taken at this time. This is because the initial phase of the VEP implementation focuses on reminding vehicle owners rather than enforcing penalties, and more announcements regarding that matter will be made later.
“For now, there will be no fines, only reminders for them to install their VEP as soon as possible,” he stated, emphasising that this decision was well-received by Singaporeans.
According to a report published earlier this week in The Star, on the first day that Malaysia implemented the VEP requirement for foreign-registered vehicles arriving from the republic, inbound traffic from Singapore was 20% lower than average.
75,412 Singaporean drivers have activated their VEP RFID tags, according to Loke, while 37,246 have not yet activated their collected tags.
