Toyota ‘Beyond Zero’ Concepts Previewed at KLIMS 2024

Aside from new and upcoming models, Toyota has also showcased its ‘Beyond Zero’ concept models at KLIMS 2024.
Besides the Corolla Cross facelift, the new Camry HEV, and the sporty GR Yaris facelift, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has also taken the centre stage of the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show 2024 (KLIMS 2024) by showcasing several interesting concept models that are part of its ‘Beyond Zero’ initiative. These concepts are meant to showcase the brand’s multi-pathway approach towards achieving carbon neutrality, which includes other carbon-neutral alternatives to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), such as hydrogen and hybrids.

Toyota FT-3e Concept shown at KLIMS 2024
We’re starting off with the trio of concept BEVs, which are led by the Toyota FT-3e Concept here. First shown at last year’s Japan Mobility Show (JMS), this futuristic concept essentially previews upcoming EV SUVs and coupe crossovers by Toyota in the future., with its FT moniker standing for ‘Future Toyota.’

Spanning 4,860 MM long, 1,955 MM wide, 1,595 MM tall, and a wheelbase of 3,000 MM, the FT-3e is a mid-to-large SUV that has a five-seater layout. In terms of underpinnings, this futuristic SUV concept shares the same dedicated EV platform as other Toyota concept EVs, including the FT-Se EV sportscar and the Lexus LF-ZC EV fastback.

Toyota Land Cruiser SE Concept at KLIMS 2024
Moving on to yet another concept EV SUV shown by UMWT, this time with a very familiar nameplate. Christened as the Toyota Land Cruise SE, this radical concept SUV gets a more conventional boxy SUV design, albeit with tons of futuristic features and design elements.

As its iconic nameplate suggests, the Land Cruiser SE is meant to showcase future all-electric off-road vehicles by Toyota, despite it using a monocoque chassis instead of a body-on-frame construction standard Land Cruiser 4x4s are known for. Regardless of that, this large SUV concept still retains the LC’s three-row seating layout, thus promising more space and practicality over the sportier FT-3e.

Toyota Kayoibako Concept at KLIMS 2024
The third BEV concept previewed by UMWT comes in a rather unconventional form, which is a battery electric-powered compact commercial van known as the Toyota Kayoibako. This quirky EV van gets its name from the reusable carton boxes often found in markets and commercial settings, where it comes with a configurable interior that provides commercial users with more flexibility and options.
Dimension-wise, the Kayoibako is quite small for a commercial van’s standard, measuring 3,990 MM long, 1,790 MM wide, 1,855 MM tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,800 MM. Compared to commercial kei vans and trucks, however, the Kayoibako is still larger.

Toyota Hilux FCEV Concept showcased at KLIMS 2024
Rounding off UMWT’s Beyond Zero lineup is none other than the Toyota Hilux FCEV concept—the sole display that features Toyota’s proprietary hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) powertrain system. Based on the current-gen Hilux Revo double-cab pick-up truck, the Hilux FCEV uses the same FCEV setup as found on the Toyota Mirai saloon, featuring three hydrogen tanks placed beneath the passenger cab, while the fuel-cell stack is snug inside the engine bay.

Electricity produced from said fuel-cell stack is then used to juice up the Hilux FCEV’s rear-mounted electric motor setup—also borrowed from the Mirai FCEV. Due to its heavier weight and larger load capacity, Toyota touts that the Hilux FCEV can get up to 600 KM of range out of its three hydrogen tanks, which is not far off from the Mirai FCEV’s claimed maximum range of 647 KM.
