Jalan Tun Razak Near HKL Sees 4,000 Vehicles Hourly
Jalan Tun Razak, as the key arterial road connecting one of Kuala Lumpur's busiest districts to suburbs to the north and south of the city, deals with a common problem on a daily basis.
Traffic congestion caused by interchanges in this area can be terrible for regular travellers, particularly during the rainy season.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa told the Dewan Rakyat that an average of 4,000 vehicles travel along Jalan Tun Razak in front of Hospital Kuala Lumpur every hour. The bustling road connects to other significant roadways such as Jalan Ampang, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Sungai Besi, Jalan Bukit Bintang, and Jalan Yahya Petra/Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz.
Vehicles from these major routes merge onto Jalan Tun Razak, continuing their journey towards Jalan Pahang in Setapak, Jalan Kuching, and the Sultan Iskandar highway.
Dr. Zaliha was responding to Datuk Seri M. Saravanan (BN-Tapah), who inquired about efforts to alleviate congestion on Jalan Tun Razak. The minister emphasised that many steps had been taken to improve traffic flow on the route, which is part of Middle Ring Road 1.
The efforts include optimising traffic flow at congested intersections such as Jalan Pahang-Jalan Tun Razak-Jalan Pekeliling Lama (Titiwangsa Hub), Jalan Tun Razak (underpass)-Jalan Tun Razak (in front of IJN) and Jalan Tun Razak-Jalan Pahang Roundabout. She also mentioned that the Jalan Tun Razak-Sultan Iskandar Highway bridge was being widened to increase traffic flow. Additionally, a direct access ramp from Jalan Tun Razak to the Duke 2 Highway will be created, allowing motorists to bypass the Jalan Pahang Roundabout. "Traffic data from the Kuala Lumpur Command Centre recorded an average of 4,000 vehicles per hour on Jalan Tun Razak in front of Hospital Kuala Lumpur. "Several intersections have been identified as causing traffic conflicts when vehicles from two different roads merge into a single lane. "To improve traffic flow, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), police, and the highway concessionaire have implemented several measures," she said.
In addition, DBKL and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research are working together to perform a research on traffic congestion on Jalan Tun Razak. Data on traffic has been gathered, and thorough suggestions for enhancing traffic will be developed before being put into action, Dr. Zaliha added.
