Members of the public are advised to beware of the recent ‘deactivated licence’ scam via SMS, JPJ says.

Members of the public are advised to beware of the ‘deactivated licence’ scam that was recently circulating via SMS, the Malaysian Road and Transport Department (JPJ) says. According to its official statement published on Facebook, the department says that this is a phishing attempt and that JPJ has never sent out text messages regarding driving licenses to the public.

JPJ's official statement regarding the 'deactivated licence' SMS scam.

“The public is advised to always be cautious with any platform that offers unauthorised JPJ services to avoid scams and financial losses. The public must first refer to JPJ and contact the department for further information,” its official statement reads.

Written in English, the circulated text messages with its sender marked as “MyJPJ” warn that “Your driving license will be deactivated. To restore, please check details,” followed by a link. The department advised the public to never click on such links, as it may lead them to phishing or malicious sites.

Those who received such text messages are advised to lodge a complaint via the official JPJ portal. Members of the public are also advised to share this with their older and/or less tech-savvy acquaintances and family members to prevent them from falling into the scam.
