India's EV Policy Extended As New Draft Remains Pending

The government of Delhi has extended its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy by an additional three months in a strong push for sustainable and clean transportation. This temporary measure guarantees the continuance of current EV subsidies and shows that the city is prepared to implement the eagerly awaited second stage of EV transition, EV Policy 2.0

Delhi's EV Policy was first introduced in August 2020 with the goal of having 25% of new car registrations be electric by 2024. This brief delay makes sure that incentives don't expire before the revised strategy is unveiled later this year, as the first phase has officially completed.

The program's extension allows residents to continue enjoying all the original benefits, such as purchase rebates, road tax exemptions, and incentives for scrapping old cars. Eligibility requirements and policy implementation remain the same. Commercial vehicles, autorickshaws, and electric two-wheelers are still eligible for full subsidies.

The draft EV Policy 2.0 suggests significant changes in the future, despite the extension maintaining the current state of affairs. These changes include a stronger push for electrifying public and private transportation, as well as dates for phasing out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in specific categories. One of the most notable aspects of Delhi's EV drive is its hefty subsidy scheme. These subsidies are still in effect throughout the three-month extension and aim to make EVs more accessible across income levels.

These subsidies are applied directly at the moment of sale, preventing buyers from experiencing bureaucratic delays in getting benefits. The government is also promoting inclusive EV adoption with specific incentives for women and small fleet owners.
