The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is increasingly concerned about heavy vehicles illegally using the right lanes on highways. To address this, JPJ will enhance enforcement against the continued use of the fast lane by vehicles such as buses and lorries.

JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli emphasized the gravity of the growing number of goods and public service vehicles misusing the fast lane, stating that 800 cases were documented by 2024 with 220 summonses issued for this violation as of April this year.

“This trend is worrying. When these vehicles are on the right lane, it means they are likely exceeding their speed limits, which are supposed to be between 80km/h and 90km/h," Aedy says, adding that there is evidence that some are going over 100km/h which has been a key factor in many accidents involving heavy vehicles in Malaysia.

Heavy vehicles are restricted from using the right lane under Rule 4A of the Road Traffic Rules 1959. First-time offenders will face penalties including a maximum compound of RM300, a fine of up to RM2,000, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months.

Repeat offenses can lead to fines up to RM4,000, a jail term of up to 12 months, or both. The public can report heavy vehicle right-lane violations by emailing aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my or using the e-Aduan@JPJ feature in the MyJPJ app.
