Commuters and residents in Negeri Sembilan have a major infrastructure milestone to look forward to! The construction of the new Seremban Sentral railway station has reached 35% progress, marking a huge leap forward in turning Seremban into a modern transit hub.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the hardest phase of the project, which involved delicate underground piling, positioning, and relocating heavy utility cables, is officially complete. Construction is now accelerating toward a targeted completion date of March 2027.

Integrating with the original 100-year-old historic station, the RM100 million makeover aims to make travel smoother, safer, and far more convenient for decades to come. Here are 5 massive upgrades coming to the new station.

⚡ QUICK SUMMARY TLDR: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Construction Milestone: The project is currently 35% complete, with challenging piling and underground utility work finished. Full completion is targeted for March 2027.
  • Massive Capacity Boost: Designed to serve 30,000 daily commuters initially, with expandable infrastructure to support up to 120,000 passengers across 6 total platforms.
  • Iconic Minangkabau Design: Features green building elements, a daylight-optimizing glass roof, new commercial spaces, and full integration with the 100-year-old historic station.
  • Solving Floods & Jams: Equipped with dual entrances (Jalan Tunku Antah and rear drop-off) to cut traffic congestion, plus a new dedicated culvert line to prevent platform flash floods.
  • Faster Commutes Ahead: Works run alongside KVDT2 to pave the way for increased KTM Komuter and ETS train frequencies once completed.

1. Minangkabau architecture meets a modern glass roof

The new station is designed around a green building concept that blends Negeri Sembilan’s cultural heritage with futuristic aesthetics.

  • Minangkabau Elements: The roof structure takes clear inspiration from traditional Minangkabau architecture, celebrating local identity.
  • Glass & Daylight Optimization: The main concourse will feature glass roof structures designed to maximize natural sunlight during the day, significantly reducing electricity consumption.
  • Commercial Spaces: Passengers can look forward to new retail and dining outlets inside the concourse while waiting for their trains.

🕰️ Preserving 100 Years Of History

While the new modern hub is being built, conservation work on the century-old historic Seremban station has been completed! This included restoring the famous roof clock tower and rewiring electrical systems to keep the heritage building safe and functioning.

2. Platform expansion to handle up to 120,000 passengers daily

Designed to meet public transport demand for the next 30 to 50 years, the station's capacity is getting a massive boost.

Initially, the station will feature 3 platforms catering to 30,000 passengers per day. However, the structural blueprint includes provision for 3 additional platforms (making 6 platforms in total), allowing the station to comfortably expand up to 120,000 passengers daily as rider demand grows.

3. Dual entrances & drop-off zones to cut town traffic

Anyone who has picked up a passenger at the old station knows the single-lane bottleneck can get chaotic during peak hours.

To solve this, the new station will feature two separate entrances and passenger drop-off points:

  • Front Entrance: Situated along Jalan Tunku Antah.
  • Rear Entrance: Located at the back of the station, dispersing traffic away from the main town center roads.
  • This dual-entrance layout will smoothly integrate with the upcoming RM2 billion Seremban Sentral Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) mega project directly behind the station.

4. Brand new drainage system to eliminate platform flash floods

Heavy downpours have historically caused frustrating flash floods along the platform and tracks, bringing train operations to a standstill.

As part of the project's additional scope, workers are constructing a brand-new dedicated culvert system. This new drainage line will divert stormwater directly into Sungai Temiang without passing through station grounds, ensuring tracks remain dry and functional even during monsoon storms.

5. Higher KTM Komuter & ETS train frequencies on the horizon

Commuters have noticed reduced midday train frequencies recently. Anthony Loke clarified that one track was temporarily closed to allow workers to safely accelerate construction on both the station and the Klang Valley Double Track Phase 2 (KVDT2) project, which is now 55.8% complete.

Once both projects are completed, train schedules will be revamped. Commuters can expect higher frequencies and shorter waiting times for KTM Komuter and ETS services, making daily commuting between Seremban and Kuala Lumpur faster and far more reliable.
