Another day, another lorry-related road fatality in Malaysia. This time, a 41-year-old motorcyclist died after being hit by a truck driven by a 54-year-old man on Saturday (May 24) on Persiaran Rajawali – Jalan Angsa, Taman Berkeley in Klang.

According to Klang Utara District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner S. Vijaya Rao, the truck was turning left from Persiaran Rajawali into Jalan Angsa when it struck the rear of the motorcycle.

“The lorry driver, who was unable to avoid it, ran over the victim. The motorcyclist died at the scene and was sent to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital for post-mortem,” he said.

The truck driver had two prior summonses, under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 and Regulation 10 of the LN 166/59 Traffic Rules, but a urine test revealed that he tested negative for drugs.

“The lorry driver has been remanded for further investigations in accordance with Section 41 (1) of the APJ 1987. The public with information regarding this incident can contact the Investigating Officer, Inspector V. Kumarendran at 017-5253136 or any nearby police station,” S. Vijaya added.

There doesn't seem to be a day that goes by without a heavy truck accident in Malaysia these days. This condition is critical and necessitates emergency action by the authorities.

Recent figures show that over the last six years, these incidents involving lorries and trailers have tragically taken the lives of at least 1,457 persons, with a fatal accident involving a heavy vehicle occurring every 36 hours, resulting in at least one death.

This number is crucial, and officials continue to announce the same old, ineffective solutions. Recently, road safety experts recommend that companies bear complete accountability for ensuring their drivers are competent and exercise caution, explicitly advising against hiring drivers with criminal records or traffic violations records.

However, effective implementation will be challenging without stringent governmental action. Words alone are insufficient; decisive measures are necessary to prevent further fatalities caused by the negligence of heavy truck operators and drivers.
