Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) has warned that it will take firm action against anyone caught using micromobility vehicles on public roads.

Deputy Director Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim said the department is aware of a short video circulating online. The 18-second clip shows three people riding electric scooters on a public road.

He said the act is illegal and puts both the riders and other road users at risk.

According to Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, riding an unauthorised vehicle on a public road is an offence. Offenders can be fined up to RM1,000, jailed for up to three months, or both.

He added that under the Road Vehicle (Prohibition of Use) (Amendment) Order 2021, micromobility vehicles like e-scooters, hoverboards, monowheels, Segways and certain electric bicycles are banned from public roads.

These vehicles are only allowed in specific places like parks, bike lanes, or private property.

Khairul also advised parents to keep an eye on their children, especially with the rising use of such vehicles.

He encouraged the public to report any violations to the JPJ or nearby authorities.

The viral video was believed to have been taken near a traffic light along the Alor Gajah–Melaka Tengah–Jasin Highway near Bachang.
