Motorcyclists Make Up 70% Of Yearly Fatal Accidents - VTAREC
Motorcyclists are the most at-risk group on Malaysian roads, making up a shocking 70% of the roughly 6,000 yearly road accident deaths. However, interestingly, the Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC) reports that motorcycle riders are only at fault for about 13% of these accidents.
VTAREC coordinator Mas Tina Abdul Hamid says that the council studies indicate cars are involved in most road incidents, at 67%, with commercial vehicles following at 20%. She notes that this data suggests car drivers, surprisingly, require more education on road safety and defensive driving.
The findings also reveal a serious issue with traffic accidents and fatalities, with someone dying in a crash every 80 minutes on average, primarily due to human error, which accounts for 80% of crash factors.
“The yearly deaths from accidents can fill graves that may require space the size of six football fields,” she says.
Despite the alarming number of road accidents and strict laws requiring motor insurance for all vehicles on the road, tens of thousands are believed to be driving without it.
In 2023, out of 740,000 road accidents reported by VTAREC, insurance claims for damages were filed in only 40% of cases. That means potentially thousands of drivers are going without the right coverage.
