National automaker Proton officially launched its Proton Xchange Programme earlier today. Present for the launch was Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke, Proton Chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, as well as Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong.
According to Proton, the Proton Xchange Programme was designed to encourage owners of older vehicles deemed unroadworthy to exchange them for a new Proton model.
It also touts itself at being driven by both the automaker’s own sustainability goals, and as support of the Malaysian government’s initiative to enhance road safety and promote sustainable mobility.
The programme is being run together by Proton with partners Car Medic Sdn Bhd serving as an authorised automotive treatment facility (AATF). The programme is opened to all car owners in Malaysia regardless of make and model.

The Proton Xchange Programme is essentially wooing owners of older cars to trade i and up to any new Proton or Proton e.MAS model as the programme offers overtrade asssitance worth up to RM2,000.
In essence, Proton is welcoming owners of older cars to trade-in and up. Older cars traded in through the Proton Xchange Programme will be properly deregistered before being scrapped and recycled responsibly by the national automaker.
In return, Proton will offer these participating owners with an overtrade support worth up to RM2,000. This incentive is offered exclusively towards participating owners in acquiring any new Proton or Proton e.MAS models.
During the programme’s launch, Transport Minister Anthony Loke added that his ministry will also reward owners participating in the Proton Xchange Programme with a complimentary first-year road tax too.
Proton has allocated a budget of RM4.8 million for this pilot programme, which is set to run from now until end of this year - Dec 31, 2025.

As an added bonus, the Ministry of Transport will also reward owners participating in the Proton Xchange Programme with a complimentary first-year road tax for new Proton or Proton e.MAS vehicles acquired through the programme.
To qualify for the incentive, vehicles must be 15 years or older and deemed to be uneconomical to repair for continued safe use. Any sedans, MPVs, vans, 4x4s, lorries and buses meeting the requirements mentioned are eligible for the programme (subject to meeting set terms and conditions such as proof of ownership).
To qualify for the overtrade incentive, the new Proton or Proton e.MAS vehicle must be registered before the end of the year. Critically, owners will need to provide a Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC) for their new vehicle together with a JPJK1KD form proving their old vehicle has been officially deregistered, and a Certificate of Destruction (COD) obtained from Car Medic.
More details about this programme can be obtained through Proton showrooms and dealerships nationwide soon.
