FT Dept, JPJ Told To Deal With Abandoned Vehicles

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has directed the Federal Territories Department to work with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to review and improve existing laws related to the disposal of abandoned vehicles in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
This directive follows a significant number of public complaints of abandoned vehicles in Kuala Lumpur, exceeding 2,500 annually in Kuala Lumpur, which necessitates prompt attention and solutions.
"However, we are faced with several legal constraints, including abandoned vehicles on private premises that cannot be towed to the local authority depot as well as vehicles that have been at the depot for a long time but have not yet been disposed of due to legal obstacles," she said in a Facebook post Monday (June 16).
She encouraged vehicle owners who wish to dispose of their cars to visit an authorised automotive treatment facility, where they can receive cash compensation based on the vehicle’s condition.
To make vehicle de-registration easier, the government introduced the e-Dereg platform last year. It allows owners to conveniently complete the process through licensed automotive treatment centres.
