JPJ: Most Commercial Vehicle Operators Fail Safety Audit
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has found that most commercial vehicle operators checked in a recent safety operation failed to meet required safety standards.
According to its Director-General, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, 64% of the companies audited under the Special Operation on Safety Audit System Guidelines (Ops Khas JISA) did not comply with the rules.
The operation, which began on June 23, involved 133 commercial vehicle companies out of which only 48 passed, while 85 were found to be non-compliant.
Of the 85 companies that failed, 43 were lorry operators and 42 were tour or express bus companies.
Some of the major issues included not having safety officers, missing GPS devices in vehicles and poor GPS tracking procedures in place.
Additionally, many operators also didn’t keep proper records of drivers working hours or breaks. According to regulations, drivers are only allowed to work for eight hours a day and must take a 30 minute break after four hours of driving.
Other problems included the lack of safety action plans and the failure to display hotline numbers or names of responsible officers on vehicles, which are needed for public complaints.
JPJ will be sending the list of these companies to the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for further action, such as suspending or cancelling their operating licences.
Aedy Fadly said JPJ will not compromise on safety and will continue to take strict action to ensure safer roads and maintain the integrity of the country’s transport system.
