BYD Atto 2 Confirmed for Malaysia as Capybara Teaser Ends

BYD Cars Malaysia officially confirmed the arrival of the Atto 2 following a series of cryptic teasers that had the local EV community buzzing.
The final reveal came via a social media post showing part of the vehicle’s front end, putting to rest earlier speculation sparked by paw prints and the puzzling phrase, “Don’t worry, Be Capy =)”.
To this day, the capybara reference remains a puzzle.

The Atto 2 will be positioned between the Dolphin hatchback and the larger Atto 3 in BYD’s line-up. Known as the Yuan Up in China, the compact B-segment SUV is built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0.
It was already seen testing in right-hand drive markets like Thailand and Australia, paving a clear path for its entry into Malaysia and by the look of it, Malaysia might just be the first to get it.
Now that the model has been confirmed, the big question is which battery specification Malaysia will get.

Globally, the Atto 2 is offered with three Blade battery options. The base 32 kWh version, available only in China, offers around 250 KM of WLTP range. However, this variant is unlikely to make it here. With Malaysians increasingly prioritising driving range even for city use, launching such a low-spec model would be a misstep.
More likely are the versions offered in Europe and Australia. The European spec comes with a 45.12 kWh battery offering 312KM of WLTP range. Australia, meanwhile, gets a larger 51 kWh unit good for up to 350KM. Either would be a better fit for the Malaysian market.

All Atto 2 variants are powered by a single front-mounted electric motor producing 130 kW or 174 HP and 290 NM of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 KM/H takes just 7.9 secs, placing it among the quicker options in its class.
Trim levels in Europe and Australia differ mainly in features, and Malaysia is expected to mirror this two-variant approach.
The higher-spec variant includes a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, surround-view camera, ambient lighting, wireless charger, and heated front seats and steering wheel. Though in Malaysia’s climate, seat ventilation would be far more welcome.

Despite its compact footprint, the Atto 2 offers a spacious cabin and a 400-litre boot, expandable to 1,340 litres with the rear seats folded. It also sports BYD’s familiar Dragon Face design, lending it a sharp, futuristic appeal aimed at younger urban buyers.

In China, pricing starts from around RM62,000. However, with Malaysia’s RM100,000 EV price floor still in place, local pricing will inevitably be higher. Even so, the Atto 2 is expected to undercut the Atto 3, making it BYD Malaysia’s most affordable SUV yet.
The bigger question now is how it will be positioned against the Dolphin. Will the Atto 2 be priced higher, or similarly? Could it even replace the Dolphin in BYD’s Malaysian range entirely?
