The Mitsubishi Grandis returns as an SUV in Europe, featuring Renault underbones and hybrid-only powertrains.

It has been more than a decade since Mitsubishi discontinued its popular compact MPV model, the Mitsubishi Grandis. But now, this familiar nameplate returns as an SUV crossover in Europe, featuring Renault’s underbones and hybrid-only powertrain lineups.

Similar to other EU-specific Mitsubishi models, the new Grandis underpins the CMF-B platform that is used as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Specifically, the new Grandis is loosely based on the Renault Symbioz, which is positioned as the marque’s new C-segment SUV crossover.

Despite the similarities, the new Grandis gets a slightly different powertrain lineup than its French cousin, as its lineup starts with a 1.3-litre turbocharged mild hybrid (MHEV) setup that delivers 140 PS. Said engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission option, helping to send power to the front wheels (FWD).

There’s also a more conventional parallel hybrid (HEV) option, which uses a 1.8-litre nat-asp petrol mill rated at 109 PS that is paired with two electric motors, a smart multi-mode transmission, and a small 1.4-kWh lithium-ion hybrid battery. Combined, the whole setup delivers 156 PS, once again driving only the front wheels (FWD).

Just like any other modern HEV, the new Grandis hybrid comes with an EV driving mode, which runs solely on the e-motors, as well as a regenerative mode that employs regenerative braking to juice up its small battery pack during deceleration and braking.

In terms of design, the new Grandis looks pretty similar to the Symbioz, featuring the same sleek silhouette with a conventional five-door SUV bodystyle. The Mitsubishi-ification treatment only comes in the form of a new front grille, Mitsubishi’s iconic triple-diamond emblems on both ends, the ‘Grandis’ nameplate at the tailgate, and five-spoke wheels.

No longer an MPV, the new Grandis features a typical five-seater layout spread across two rows of seats. Up front, it gets the same front dash setup as the Symbioz, featuring a portrait-oriented 10.4-inch infotainment screen powered by Google built-in OS, a digital metre cluster, and a floating central console housing the gear shifter and several buttons for the climate control.

Despite missing the third-row seat, the new Grandis is still a pretty practical family car, featuring a boot that holds between 434 and 566 litres of space, depending on the position of the slidable rear seats. Other equipment highlights include a power remote tailgate, a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic dimming, and a host of ADAS functions.

And just like the Symbioz, the all-new 2025 Mitsubishi Grandis will also be manufactured at Renault’s plant in Valladolid, Spain. Deliveries are slated to commence sometime later this year, where it will be a European market special along with other Renault-based Mitsubishi models.
