The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has issued a firm reminder to motorcycle convoys not to disrupt the flow of traffic or face stern consequences under the law.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director, Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said anyone caught obstructing traffic during convoy activities could be prosecuted under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The penalty for such offence is either a fine between RM1,000 and RM5,000, jailed for up to one year, or both.

He emphasised that convoy organisers must inform the JSPT ahead of any group ride for coordination purposes, ensuring the safety of all road users.

Convoys without official police assistance must strictly follow all traffic laws. He added that the use of private marshals or escorts to control traffic is not permitted under any circumstance.

His statement comes in the wake of a video circulating online showing a group of motorcyclists riding in a convoy along the North-South Expressway. The footage, believed to have been recorded at KM 285 near Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, shows the convoy being escorted by several individuals in yellow reflective vests.

According to Mohd Yusri, the group was travelling from Kuala Lumpur towards the southern region. He reiterated that consideration on the road is key to maintaining traffic flow and ensuring everyone’s safety.

He also reminded slower vehicles to keep to the left lane and not hinder faster traffic. Road users of all types including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists must obey traffic regulations at all times, whether on highways, rural roads or within city limits.
