Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made it clear that the new subsidised price of RON95 petrol soon to be set at RM1.99 per litre applies only to Malaysians.

As for foreigners, including tourists and visitors from Singapore, they will have to pay the market rate, which will be around RM2.50 to RM2.60 per litre.

Speaking at the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas, Anwar said this move reflects the government’s responsibility to protect the interests of its citizens under the MADANI framework.

He stressed that the fuel subsidy is meant for Malaysians who contribute to the country through taxes and participation in the national economy. Anwar dismissed criticisms from the opposition, questioning why foreigners are not entitled to the same fuel prices.

“I am the Prime Minister of Malaysia. My job is to care for Malaysians. Foreigners don’t pay taxes here, so it doesn’t make sense for them to enjoy the same subsidies,” he said. He also pointed out that this is not about discrimination, but about making sure national resources are used wisely and fairly.

Anwar also said the targeted subsidy approach is part of the government’s broader effort to cut unnecessary spending. For too long, he said, fuel subsidies have benefited people who have no stake in Malaysia’s economic development.

He added that fuel prices in Malaysia remain among the lowest in the region, even after rationalisation efforts. Compared to countries like Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, Malaysians still enjoy significantly cheaper rates.

According to the Prime Minister, the savings from this initiative will be redirected towards improving social welfare, boosting rural development, and supporting efforts to raise the minimum wage, especially in the public sector and government-linked companies.

Based on Anwar’s announcement on July 23, around 18 million Malaysians are expected to benefit from the new subsidised RON95 pricing, with MyKad serving as proof of eligibility.
