School Bus Overturns After Hitting Open Manhole, 16 Injured

What was meant to be a routine school trip took a terrifying turn when a school bus overturned after hitting an open pothole along Jalan Abdul Samad in Johor. 16 students were rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital with various injuries, including broken hands and fingers.
Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin confirmed the incident and said he's been in contact with both the school and hospital to monitor the children’s condition.
“All affected students are receiving the care they need,” he shared in a Facebook post, adding that the state will ensure their recovery is closely monitored. -full_normal.jpg)
Meanwhile, the Johor government has launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash, which was reportedly triggered by an open manhole.
State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said it’s unclear if the manhole was left uncovered due to theft or contractor negligence.
“I’ve ordered a full investigation and immediate action if anyone is found responsible. We’ll also audit the surrounding area to flag any other risks, especially on roads frequently used by school buses and public transport,” he says.
Fazli stressed that public safety is non-negotiable.“This should never have happened. We’ll make sure improvements are made without delay.”
He also expressed his concern for the students and confirmed that state representatives had visited the victims at the hospital.
“My prayers are with them. And thank you to everyone who helped at the scene,” Fazli added.
While all injured students are expected to recover, the incident has reignited public frustration over recurring road safety issues. Potholes and neglected infrastructure remain a serious concern, especially on routes used by schoolchildren.
Despite repeated assurances, accidents like this keep happening and this time, it involved innocent lives. Although there were no fatalities, the outcome could have been much worse.
The authorities should treat this as a wake-up call. Beyond statements and promises, it’s time for firm, preventive action to ensure such incidents don’t happen again.
