A viral video showing a roadside confrontation between a group of cyclists and a Rapid KL bus driver has sparked widespread public debate, but not in the way the cyclists likely intended.

The footage, which circulated across social media platforms, shows the group accusing the bus driver of allegedly “squeezing them dangerously” during their ride.

“We were cycling on the left lane when this bus driver came driving dangerously close to us,” claimed one cyclist in the video. In an attempt to escalate the matter, the cyclists also posted the driver’s full name, bus registration number, and employee ID online, drawing attention to the incident and seemingly hoping for disciplinary action.

However, public sentiment quickly turned against the cyclists.

Viewers pointed out that the group had been riding side-by-side on the left lane of a public road, potentially obstructing traffic flow.

Many questioned whether the cyclists were partially at fault for creating a hazardous situation, with hundreds of online comments expressing support for the bus driver instead.

Despite being surrounded by the group during the fight, the bus driver remained calm.

He was seen exiting his vehicle to address the cyclists directly. Officers from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) who happened to be in the area intervened shortly after and helped diffuse the tension.

In a statement, Rapid KL confirmed that the driver had encountered difficulty navigating the road as the group of cyclists had occupied the left lane, obstructing his path.

“This situation forced the bus captain to halt the vehicle and confront the group. A brief altercation ensued but was swiftly brought under control by a passing JPJ officer,” the company said.

Rapid KL also confirmed that an internal investigation has been initiated, and the driver has received counselling as part of standard post-incident procedures.

The incident has since reignited public discussion around road-sharing responsibilities, particularly the conduct of cyclists on busy roads.

“He represents the voice of the majority of road users who have long been fed up with the attitude of certain cycling groups who act as they please,” wrote one social media user.
