Nanta: Damaged Road Surface Linked to Cyclist’s Death

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has confirmed that crocodile cracking, a form of surface damage, was present at the scene of a fatal accident in Kulai, Johor, that killed a cyclist from Singapore.

He said the damage was found on state road J165, likely caused by frequent use by heavy vehicles, especially lorries from a nearby quarry.

Although the road falls under the State Government’s jurisdiction, Nanta said the Works Ministry is concerned about its poor condition, which poses a serious risk to all road users, including motorcyclists and cyclists.

He said road shoulder grading was done earlier this year, but the damage resurfaced due to the excessive load carried by heavy vehicles.

The incident happened around 9.45AM yesterday, when a male Singaporean cyclist is believed to have fallen and was then hit by a trailer along Jalan Gunung Pulai.

As an immediate step, Nanta said he had contacted state authorities to begin pavement rehabilitation works and re-levelling of the road shoulders in the affected areas. Full repairs will follow once funding is approved.

He urged road maintenance parties, local communities, and road users to work together in keeping road conditions safe and reducing accidents.

Nanta also reminded cyclists to prioritise safety. He advised them to avoid roads used by heavy vehicles, cycle during safer times like early mornings on weekends, and use safety gear like helmets and reflective lights.

"Follow traffic rules, avoid using mobile phones while cycling, and always ensure your bicycle is in good condition," he added. He also expressed his condolences to the victim’s family.
