Xpeng has begun the CKD operation for its X9 EV MPV in Indonesia. Is Malaysia next on the list?

The Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2025 just kicked off this week, and we’ve already got plenty of regional debuts going on. One of which is the newly updated 2025 model year (2025 MY) version of the Xpeng X9, which not only makes its Indonesian debut but also comes in a CKD form for the republic’s market.

The first CKD unit of the X9 EV MPV was showcased at Xpeng’s main foyer at GIIAS 2025, where the local assembly effort was being done by PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM), with the assembly line operational since July 1 this year. The white X9 CKD displayed here is the first of the 800 CKD units planned by the automaker, with a targeted annual production of 8,600 units at HIM’s facility in Purwakarta, West Java.

What makes things more significant is that this is Xpeng’s first and only overseas production outside of its core facilities in native China, with its CEO and founder He Xiaopeng describing this as a momentous occasion for the NEV marque.

“Excited to officially announce Xpeng’s first global production base in Indonesia. Today marks a historic milestone as we deliver the first locally produced Xpeng X9 to Indonesian customers!” his official statement on the company’s X/Twitter account reads.

And just like the model displayed at Hong Kong earlier this year, the Indonesian-spec X9 is based on the 2025 updated version of the EV MPV. Style-wise, the 2025 update sees no significant changes take place on the X9, with the only notable visual change being the illuminated Xpeng lettering above the LED taillight strip of the car.

The upgrades are more substantial as we get inside and beneath the metalworks of the X9, where it gets new soft-touch material for the cabin while retaining the same three-row layout as before. Depending on the variant, the Indo-spec X9 CKD comes with either the slimmer captain-style chairs for the lower-specced models or the signature zero-gravity seats that can be fully reclined for the range-topper.

As for the upgrades beneath the metalwork, the updated X9 gets a new, AI-optimised tuning for its dual-chamber air suspension system that promises to minimise body roll and pitch for a more comfortable ride. NVH quality has also been improved, while Xpeng’s Turing AI-powered ADAS is now standard across the range.

Three variants of the new X9 CKD are available in Indonesia, namely the baseline Standard Range, the mid-spec Long Range Pro, and the top-spec Long Range Pro Plus.

The Standard Range model uses an 84.5-kWh LFP battery pack that offers up to 500 km of WLTP range, while the two Long Range variants benefit from a bigger 101.5-kWh NMC-type battery pack for up to 590 km of WLTP range. All variants are powered by the same single FWD motor setup rated at 315 HP (235 kW) and 450 NM, allowing a century sprint finish of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h.

Prices for the 2025 Xpeng X9 CKD in Indonesia start from IDR 990 million (RM256,223) for the Standard Range, IDR 1,059 million (RM274,081) for the Long Range Pro, and the top-spec Long Range Pro Plus tops off the list at IDR 1,099 million (RM284,434). For reference, the pre-updated X9 retails from RM269,888 to RM299,888 in Malaysia for the fully imported (CBU) units from China.

With Xpeng’s CKD operations now commenced in Indonesia, could we be getting the upcoming 2025 X9 from our neighbouring republic? Xpeng Vice President of Finance & Overseas Strategic Support Office James Wu previously shared that the company is still evaluating the possibilities of setting up its CKD operations here in Malaysia but is unsure of the long-term government policies regarding the EV tax exemptions.

If the policies remain unclear, local Xpeng brand representative Bermaz Auto Berhad (BAuto) may look to neighboring countries to assemble XPeng vehicles to ensure competitive pricing and accessibility for Malaysian consumers. So, Indonesian-made X9 for Malaysia soon?
