From Roads to Rivers: Chery Malaysia Supports Terrapin Conservation

Chery Malaysia is going beyond cars to play a role in protecting one of the country’s rarest and most overlooked creatures, the river terrapin.
Through a contribution to the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS), the company is supporting efforts to save the critically endangered Southern River Terrapin, found only in Malaysia and Cambodia.

Once common in local rivers, the terrapins have been driven to the edge by pollution, habitat loss and illegal egg collection. The Kemaman River in Terengganu is now one of their last strongholds.
TCS, founded in 2011, is Malaysia’s first and only NGO focused on freshwater turtle conservation. Its long-running programme in Kemaman combines research, breeding and community engagement to restore populations.

During a recent visit to Kampung Pasir Gajah, Chery Malaysia symbolically adopted 31 terrapins and provided feed for those being reared at the centre. The contribution supports daily conservation work while raising awareness of the species.
“Preserving Malaysia’s natural heritage is as important as driving progress on the road. The river terrapin is a symbol of river health, and by supporting TCS we hope to inspire more Malaysians to protect this unique part of our biodiversity,” said Michael Chew, Vice President of Chery Malaysia.

TCS co-founder Dr Chen Pelf Nyok said the support boosts both conservation work and awareness. The society has saved over 11,000 eggs and released nearly 6,000 hatchlings into the Kemaman River, with sightings also recorded in Kedah, Perak and Pahang.

River terrapins are vital to healthy ecosystems, recycling nutrients and reflecting water quality. Protecting them benefits rivers, wildlife and local communities alike.
For Chery Malaysia, the partnership reflects a broader commitment to sustainability and environmental care, ensuring future generations inherit a richer natural heritage.
