JPJ Warns Against ‘Kopi-O’ Licences As Fake Driving School Goes Viral
Getting a licence without tests may sound too good to be true, because it is.
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has once again warned Malaysians about so-called “kopi-o licences,” after spotting a fake social media account offering driving licences without training or testing.
These illegal services are nothing new, but they continue to thrive.
In its latest social media post, JPJ highlighted a page called “Sekolah Memandu Jaya”, which boldly claimed that a valid licence could be obtained without sitting for any JPJ tests. Even more audacious, the page used a photo of Transport Minister Anthony Loke to appear legitimate.
“This ad and the account behind it are fake. Don’t fall for it. Please be cautious and don’t risk your money or safety by trusting these illegal promotions,” the department warned.
Despite regular enforcement and public reminders, the kopi-o licence culture doesn’t seem to be going away.
For many, it’s the kind of thing you hear in passing. Someone always knows another person who managed to get a licence without going through the proper steps.
Just pay a little, skip the test, and that’s it.
But this mindset is exactly what JPJ is trying to fight. Bribery isn’t just illegal. It’s dangerous.
You have to wonder how much money these syndicates have made over the years by selling shortcuts. The appeal is obvious; faster, cheaper, and no stress. But at what cost?
There’s also a bigger issue at play which is accessibility. If the legal licensing process feels slow, costly, or complicated, people will always look for a shortcut. Experts say delays in rolling out faster digital testing such as e-testing only widen the gap and allow these syndicates to thrive.
Until then, JPJ urges the public to stay alert, report suspicious ads, and obtain their licences through the proper, legal process without shortcuts like kopi-o licences.
